From idea to new brand creation
In a climate of squeezed budgets and with employers increasingly frustrated by the mounting legal costs of managing a workforce, employment lawyer-turned entrepreneur, Omer Simjee, knew there must be another, better way. He could see that by blending employment law and HR consultancy services, employers of all sizes could access legally compliant, affordable support. And so, a new firm was founded.
But rewind a few steps…a name and credible brand identity were needed to package and communicate the new business and its services to clients. The development of an entrepreneur’s brand is a very personal process and, as always, we felt incredibly honoured to be recommended and subsequently commissioned to support and guide this process for Omer.
Appreciation of the start up environment
From Bretom’s prior client experience, we are only too aware of those exciting but anxious early days of start-up life where an entrepreneur’s world can be a little lonely and short on the right kind of advice. Our approach was to strike a balance between respecting the nature of start ups and presenting options that allowed plenty of room for future growth, both in terms of creativity and process.
Working in partnership with EMC, a thorough review of the competitor landscape enabled our team to identify opportunities for differentiation through design, functionality and content strategy. It was important to challenge traditional assumptions about the legal sector and develop a genuine understanding of the new firm’s offering.

The new identity needed to encapsulate the distinct lawyer-led combination of HR and legal expertise and after exploring a number of different naming routes and executions, we had our eureka! moment. Magma Legal emerged as the name of choice – fluid, fast and disruptive – which precisely sums up the firm’s service provision characteristics.
Bretom seized the momentum of the naming process to develop a brand mark and style that exuded modernity whilst promoting credibility and professionalism. The resulting sleek designs were rolled out across the logo, stationery and business cards before we embarked on the final stage of website design and development. Here, Bretom was keen to ensure a level of functionality that incorporated ease of use and full editorial control with the ability to support rich content in the future.
